10 Mistakes Tourists Make on Guatapé Day Trips (and How to Avoid Them)
The most common Guatapé mistakes: wrong timing, wrong shoes, no cash, skipping the boat, and 6 more. Save time, money, and frustration.
After watching thousands of tourists visit Guatapé, the same mistakes repeat every single day. Here's how to not be that person.
1. Arriving at El Peñol Between 10am and 3pm on a Weekend
This is when the line is 1–2 hours long. Arrive before 9am or after 3pm. Weekdays: almost no line at any time. This single tip saves you 90 minutes of standing in sun.
2. Not Bringing Cash
El Peñol entry: cash only. Most street food: cash only. Tuk-tuks: cash only. Guatapé has 2–3 ATMs that run out on busy weekends. Bring COP from Medellín.
3. Wearing the Wrong Shoes
Flip-flops on 740 concrete steps with metal grating is a recipe for blisters and slips. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes with grip. Your feet will thank you.
4. Skipping Sunscreen
The staircase has zero shade. The lake reflects UV. At 1,900m elevation, UV intensity is higher than at sea level. SPF 50+ is non-negotiable. Reapply after the climb.
5. Eating at the El Peñol Parking Lot
The restaurants right at the base of the rock charge tourist prices for food that's mediocre at best. Walk 10 minutes into town for better food at half the price.
6. Skipping the Boat Tour
Some day-trippers climb the rock, walk the town, and take the bus home. They miss the best part. The reservoir from the water — weaving between islands — is a completely different experience from seeing it from above. Budget $8–15 for a group ride.
7. Not Negotiating Boat Prices
Walk-up prices at the dock are negotiable, especially for private boats. Ask what the price includes. Confirm duration. Get the number before you board, not after.
8. Taking the Wrong Bus Back
Make sure your return bus goes to Terminal del Norte in Medellín. Some buses end at intermediate towns. Ask "¿Este bus va a Terminal del Norte?" before boarding. The last bus is around 5:30pm — set a phone alarm.
9. Trying to Do Everything in Half a Day
El Peñol alone takes 2 hours (travel + climb + photos). The town walk is another hour. Boat tour: 1.5 hours. Lunch: 1 hour. A proper Guatapé day needs 6–8 hours minimum. Leave Medellín by 7am.
10. Not Staying Overnight
The biggest mistake of all. Sunset on the reservoir, morning mist on the water, empty streets at dawn — the best parts of Guatapé happen when the day-trippers leave. If you can swing one night, do it.
