Every tour company sells Guatapé for $35–45. But if you're comfortable navigating a bus terminal and ordering lunch in Spanish (or pointing at a menu), you can do the entire day for about $25 USD.
The Full Budget Breakdown
Bus: $10 round trip. Terminal del Norte in Medellín → Guatapé. Buses leave every 30 minutes starting at 5:30am. The ride is 2.5 hours. Last return bus is around 5:30pm. Buy tickets at the window — no advance booking needed.
El Peñol entry: COP 25,000 (~$7). Cash only. No student discount. The 740-step climb and the 360° view at the top are the highlight of the entire trip.
Tuk-tuk: $2–3 round trip. From Guatapé town to El Peñol base and back. Or walk it (40 minutes each way) to save this entirely.
Lunch: $3–5. Skip the lakefront restaurants. Find a local comedor in town and get the almuerzo corriente (set lunch) — soup, rice, meat, beans, plantain, and juice for COP 12,000–18,000.
Boat ride: $0 if you skip it, or $8 if you negotiate. Walk to the waterfront docks and wait for a group boat that needs one more person to fill up. You can often negotiate $8–10 for a 1-hour ride. This is optional but recommended.
Total: $22–27 USD
That covers transport, the rock, lunch, and potentially a boat ride. Everything else — wandering the zócalos, taking photos, people-watching in the plaza — is free.
Money-Saving Tips
Bring COP cash from Medellín — Guatapé ATMs run out on weekends. Skip the restaurants near El Peñol parking (tourist trap pricing). Buy snacks and water at a tienda, not from vendors on the staircase. Take the 5:30am bus to beat crowds entirely — you'll be at El Peñol before 9am with no line.
When the Tour Is Worth the Extra $15
