Guatapé Photography Guide: 12 Spots for the Best Shots

The 12 best photography spots in Guatapé: El Peñol summit, zócalo streets, waterfront, drone zones, and the shots most tourists miss.

Guatapé is one of the most photographed places in Colombia. But most visitors take the same three shots from the same three spots. Here are 12 locations that give you the full range.

El Peñol Rock

1. The summit panorama. The obvious shot — 360° reservoir views. Best light: before 10am (golden, misty) or after 4pm (golden hour). Midday is harsh and flat.
2. Looking up from the base. Stand directly below and shoot straight up. The staircase zigzagging up the granite face with tiny climbers gives a sense of scale that the summit view doesn't.
3. The staircase itself. About halfway up, look down through the metal grating. The vertiginous perspective with the green landscape below is dramatic.

The Zócalos

4. Calle del Recuerdo. The most concentrated zócalo street. Shoot at an angle to stack the colorful facades in a receding line. Best in afternoon side-light.
5. Single panel close-up. Pick one detailed bas-relief and fill the frame. The textures and hand-painted details reward macro-style shooting.
6. Doorways and windows. The painted wooden doors and barred windows framed by zócalos below make compelling compositions. Look for a local sitting in a doorway for a lifestyle element.

The Waterfront

7. Sunset reflection. Position yourself on the waterfront jetty during golden hour. The reservoir becomes a mirror — islands, sky, and clouds perfectly reflected.
8. Boat in motion. A colorful wooden tour boat cutting through turquoise water against green islands. Shoot from the shore or from another boat.
9. Morning mist. 6:30–7:30am. Mist sitting on the reservoir surface with island silhouettes emerging. Requires staying overnight.

Hidden Angles

10. The approach road. On the drive/bus from Medellín, the first glimpse of the reservoir from the mountain pass is stunning. If you're in a car, stop.
11. Church tower. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen has a tower with elevated views over the colorful rooftops and the reservoir beyond.
12. Kayak-level. Water-level perspective with El Peñol Rock rising in the background, paddle visible in frame. Requires morning kayak rental.

Gear Tips

Wide-angle lens for the summit and street compositions. Polarizing filter for the water (cuts glare, deepens the turquoise). Waterproof phone case if you're doing any water activities. Drone: check local regulations — some areas near the dam restrict drones.
