The Pablo Escobar Finca in Guatapé: What's There Now and Should You Visit?

The ruins of La Manuela, Pablo Escobar's former lakeside estate near Guatapé. What's there, how to visit, and the ethical debate.

On a peninsula jutting into the reservoir about 15 minutes by boat from Guatapé sits the bombed-out shell of La Manuela — the lakeside estate that Pablo Escobar built in the late 1980s. It's one of the most visited ruins in Colombia, and one of the most debated.

What's Actually There

The structure was partially destroyed in a 1993 car bomb attack by the Cali cartel and has been abandoned since. What remains: concrete walls covered in graffiti, a crumbling swimming pool, overgrown gardens, and the skeleton of what was once a multi-million-dollar lakeside mansion. The views from the property are stunning — Escobar knew how to pick locations.

How to Visit

Most boat tours from the Guatapé waterfront pass by the finca. Some stop and let you walk around the ruins (15–20 minutes). Others just cruise past with commentary. If you want to visit specifically, ask your boat operator before boarding. Guided jet ski routes also often include a stop.

The Ethical Question

Many Colombians have complicated feelings about narco tourism. Escobar's violence killed thousands and devastated families across the country. Some locals feel that visiting the finca glorifies a man who caused immense suffering. Others argue that understanding history — even ugly history — matters, and that tourism revenue helps the community.

There's no right answer. If you visit, do so with respect and awareness. Don't pose for celebratory photos. Listen to what your guide says about the impact on the local community. And understand that for many Colombians, this isn't ancient history — it's within living memory.

Is It Worth the Detour?

As a historical site, it's genuinely interesting — a physical reminder of a dark chapter. Most boat tours include it naturally without extra cost. If it's a standalone trip just for the finca, probably not worth it. The reservoir views alone are reason enough for the boat ride.
