Weekend in Guatapé: The Perfect 2-Day Itinerary
The ideal 2-day Guatapé weekend: hour-by-hour itinerary with El Peñol, boat tours, water sports, sunset, and the best restaurants.
One day in Guatapé is good. Two days is transformative. Here's the itinerary that hits everything without feeling rushed.
Day 1: The Icons
7:00am — Bus from Terminal del Norte ($5). Grab coffee and an arepa at the terminal.
9:30am — Arrive Guatapé. Drop bags at hotel/hostel. Tuk-tuk to El Peñol ($2).
10:00am — Climb El Peñol Rock. 740 steps, 45 minutes up. Take your time. The view at the top is worth every step.
11:30am — Tuk-tuk back to town. Walk the zócalos. Every street is a photo opportunity.
1:00pm — Lunch. Trout at a lakefront restaurant — the one meal where the tourist premium is worth the view.
2:30pm — Group boat tour from the waterfront ($10–15). 1.5 hours looping through the islands.
4:30pm — Free time. Walk to the Plazoleta de los Zócalos, grab an ice cream, browse souvenir shops.
6:00pm — Sunset from the waterfront. Cold beer. Watch the sky change colors over the reservoir.
7:30pm — Dinner in town. Try the trucha al ajillo (garlic butter trout) at a quieter spot away from the main strip.
Day 2: The Water
6:30am — Sunrise. Walk to the waterfront and watch the mist lift off the reservoir. If you're a photographer, this is your golden hour.
7:00am — Kayak or paddleboard rental ($12–20/hr). The water is glass-flat at this hour. Paddle between the islands. No motorboats, no noise, just water and mountains.
9:00am — Brunch at Café Zócalo. Good coffee, pastries, people-watching.
10:30am — Optional: jet ski ($40/30min) or zip-line near El Peñol ($15–25). Or just wander streets you didn't explore yesterday.
12:30pm — Set lunch at a local comedor ($4). Soup, rice, meat, beans, juice. Colombian fuel.
2:00pm — Final waterfront walk. Pick up any souvenirs. Last photos.
3:00pm — Bus back to Medellín. Arrive by 5:30pm with the whole evening free.
